CIU10 Student Opportunities

NHD, a non-profit education organization, offers year-long academic programs that engage over half a million middle- and high school students around the world annually in conducting and presenting original research on historical topics. National History Day breathes life into traditional history curriculum by engaging students and teachers in a hands-on and in-depth approach to studying the past. By focusing on a theme, teams of 2-5 students are introduced to a new organizational structure of learning history.

Infrastructure is the framework of our world. Buildings, roads, and power supplies are part of the infrastructure needs of our society. Your challenge is to improve our transportation system. Think of current transportation systems like air travel, vehicle travel, bicycling, etc. In what ways can they be improved to create a safer, healthier, and cleaner world? Or does your team have an idea for a new transportation system? Create a prototype that shows this improved, or new, transportation system. Demonstrate how your system works by moving a ping pong ball through your prototype.

Each spring, the CIU10 hosts a Reading Competition for elementary school students. Questions are based on 30 age-appropriate books, which the students read during the academic year. Students are given the opportunity to compete against one another, in teams, to see who can correctly answer the most questions about the books they have read.

Destination Imagination (DI) is an international problem-solving competition available in Pennsylvania for students of all ages. Our student-led STEAM-based Challenges reinforce core social-emotional learning (SEL) competencies—social awareness, relationship skills, responsible decision making, self-awareness, and self-management.

The 24 Challenge® is a tournament-style competition organized around the 24® Game. Millions of students in more than 20 countries have participated since 1988. Over a period of months preceding the event, teachers use the 24® Game in their classrooms to help students hone their mathematics skills.

The Governor’s STEM Competition challenges student teams from across the state to research, design, and present a device or project that can make the quality of life better for Pennsylvanians by accomplishing a series of practical tasks that can fulfill real-world needs.

Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering free educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition to high schools across the country. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. Poetry Out Loud is a partnership of the National Endowment for the Arts, Poetry Foundation, and the state and jurisdictional arts agencies.
