Elementary Reading Competition

Each spring, the CIU10 hosts a Reading Competition for elementary school students. Questions are based on a maximum of 25 age-appropriate books which the students read during the academic year. Students are given the opportunity to compete against one another, in teams, to see who can correctly answer the most questions about the books they have read.

About the Reading Competition

All charter schools, school districts, and nonpublic schools are welcome to participate in the reading competitions.

Teams consist of 6 to 12 students from 4th to 6th grade, a team may choose to have up to two alternates.

Competition Date: TBD 2027

Location and Times: State College High School, 650 Westerly Pkwy, State College, PA 16801. The competition will run 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Team registration begins at 8:00 AM. Doors will open at 8:00 AM.

Fee: $125 per team. Districts will receive an invoice after the competition has completed.

Registration Deadline: TBD at 3:00PM

Note:

Registrations cannot be accepted after the deadline has passed.
"Bookworms" will not be accepted as a team name.
Each team MUST provide the name & email of a moderator and scorekeeper at the time of registration.
There will be a 35 minute lunch break, beginning at 12:15PM. Students should bring their lunch. The CIU10 will NOT be providing lunches the day of the competition.
Parents and guests are welcome to attend.
Students names will be displayed as entered in the registration. Certificates with misspellings will be corrected and emailed to the team advisor the week after the competition has completed.

Competition Registration Checklist

When registering, please make sure you have the following information.

District & School Information
Team Name - "Bookworms" and "Page Turners" will not be accepted. Team names must 30 characters or less. Get creative!
Team Adviser information
Student's names & Grade Levels
Moderator & Scorekeeper Information
- Each team MUST provide the name & email of a moderator and scorekeeper at the time of registration.
- Moderators and Scorekeepers cannot be the same person.
- Each team must have one coach in competition rooms with teams at all times.
- Fellow teachers, trusted high school students, paraprofessionals, PTOs, librarians, instructional coaches, and family members may all be possible moderators and scorekeepers.
- If you have additional coaches attending, they may act as scorekeepers/moderators.
- If more than one team is being registered, additional moderators and scorekeepers must be selected.

- Due to the CIU10 no later than one week before the competition day.

Payment

Districts will receive an invoice after the competition has completed. Payment prior to the competition is not required for teams to participate.

Parents and Guests

Reading team families are invited to watch students compete.

During rounds, we ask that:

All spectators please remain in the classrooms with doors closed until an announcement has been made to move to the next round.
All cellphones be turned completely off
That no pictures or videos be taken while teams compete. Pictures may be taken in the gymnasium after the competition.
