This three-credit course is designed for educators from grades K-12. The participant will be introduced to strategies and techniques for dealing with students who display a high degree of inappropriate behavior; and in doing so, raising their self-esteem and increasing their academic success in meeting the Pennsylvania Academic Standards and perform well on state and local assessments. This is an online Moodle class, and each session contains a series of lessons, videos, written responses, and other activities.
This course, which lasts approximately 30 days, will be completed strictly online using the Moodle platform. The instructor for this course is Agolino Educational Services. Pending receipt of payment, participants will receive an email from Agolino Educational Services containing their log-on information the night before the course begins.
Participants who successfully complete all requirements of this course will earn Three (3) PDE Graduate Level Credits, equal to 90 Act 48 Hours.
Participants will be able to:
- relate emotions in students to how those emotions affect the teacher.
- describe the use of self-talk as an integral part of how we develop our attitudes, beliefs, and emotions.
- distinguish irrational and rational beliefs that are common to those working with students who are difficult to manage.
- list and identify techniques for setting up effective schedules and procedures.
- develop effective, enforceable rules and consequences for their classrooms.
- list the four goals that students hope to achieve by engaging in misbehavior.
- give examples of defense mechanisms used by students who engage in misbehavior.
- explain the psycho-educational stages that students with emotional and behavioral problems progress through.
- identify the general principles of behavior modification techniques.
- summarize how punishment can be both effective and ineffective.
- write a short paper in which they will analyze a classroom situation, decide on the emotion most aroused by the situation, discuss how the aroused emotions might affect the teacher’s management of the behavior, and suggest an “emotion-reducing” activity.
- develop a set of no more than five rules for their classrooms and be able to justify why these rules are appropriate and enforceable.
- identify one student they currently have and the stage they think they may presently be exhibiting. They will describe the interventions they have been trying and then decide if they should change their approach based on the student’s psycho-educational stage.
- identify and define each of the following descriptions so that they are observable and countable: lazy, mean, very defiant, aggressive, fights a lot, a manipulator, doesn’t get along with others, disorganized, has poor motivation, doesn’t care, and acts wild.
- read a case study and determine and explain the various defense mechanisms being used.
- develop a behavioral intervention plan form that includes all relevant information on the specific and general procedures to be followed for an individual student.
- write a plan of implementation in which they will describe a student that they currently have in their class who displays frequent inappropriate behavior. They will discuss background and demographic information on the student, how they dealt with the situation, and whether their methods worked. They will also comment on how, if the situation were to occur again, they would use the information they have learned in this course to more effectively deal with the situation.
Graduate Level Requirement
Act 48 requires 42 hours of instruction plus 48 hours of out-of-class activity including a course project. Participants’ out-of-class assignments include but are not limited to:
- complete activities that incorporate the Pennsylvania Academic Standards.
- write a plan of implementation that will include the effective teaching strategies and methods presented in this course. This plan will state how methods and strategies can be used in their own classrooms.
- read and summarize chapters in Classroom Instruction That Works: Research-Based Strategies for Increasing Student Achievement.
