    Course Description

    This three-credit graduate level course is designed for educators with an in-depth exploration of strategies and techniques for developing and using rubrics to assess student performance in the classroom. This course will introduce educators to a wide variety of rubrics for teaching, instruction and assessment that will maximize student performance and enable them to better meet the Pennsylvania Academic Standards and perform well on standardized tests, mainly the PSSA. This is an online Moodle class, and each session contains a series of lessons, videos, written responses and other activities.

    This course, which lasts approximately 30 days, will be completed strictly online using the Moodle platform. The instructor for this course is Agolino Educational Services. Pending receipt of payment, participants will receive an email from Agolino Educational Services containing their log-on information the night before the course begins.

    Participants who successfully complete all requirements of this course will earn Three (3) PDE Graduate Level Credits, equal to 90 Act 48 Hours.

    Participants will be able to:

    • discuss the reliability of scoring guides.
    • illustrate how students can participate in the scoring guide assessment process.
    • list and identify strategies for helping children give a task their "best shot".
    • distinguish strategies teachers can use to help their students improve their performance.
    • analyze how a teacher can assess each child's improvement over time.
    • justify the place of scoring guides in a balanced assessment program.
    • conclude the key benefits of scoring guide assessment.
    • demonstrate how to use a scoring guide to score a students work.
    • create ways teachers can inform parents about assessments.
    • examine how a teacher can use technology to locate and create scoring guides.

    Graduate Level Requirement

    Act 48 requires 42 hours of instruction plus 48 hours of out-of-class activity including a course project. Participants' out-of-class assignments include but are not limited to:
    • complete activities that incorporate the Pennsylvania Academic Standards.
    • write a plan of implementation that will include several of the strategies for developing and using scoring guides discussed in this course.  The paper will state how these methods and approaches can be used in their own classrooms.
    • participants will read ad summarize chapters in A Complete Guide to Rubrics Assessment Made Easy for Teachers, K-6.
