This three-credit graduate level course is designed to provide educators with a in-depth exploration of the history of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and how they can use this knowledge not only when teaching social studies, but to implement cross-curricular lessons in all subject areas consistent with the Pennsylvania Academic Standards. This will increase their students' academic success in meeting the Pennsylvania Academic Standards, and will aide students in performing well on state and local assessments. This is an online Moodle class, and each session contains a series of lessons, videos, written responses, and other activities.
This course, which lasts approximately 30 days, will be completed strictly online using the Moodle platform. The instructor for this course is Agolino Educational Services. Pending receipt of payment, participants will receive an email from Agolino Educational Services containing their log-on information the night before the course begins.
Participants who successfully complete all requirements of this course will earn Three (3) PDE Graduate Level Credits, equal to 90 Act 48 Hours.Participants will be able to:
- describe how when first discovered by Europeans, Pennsylvania, like the rest of the continent, was inhabited by groups of American Indians of Mongoloid ancestry who were unaware of European culture.
- state the other large linguistic group that lived in Pennsylvania, the Algonkians, represented by the Delawares, the Susquehannocks, the Shawnees, and other tribes.
- Interpret why Pennsylvania's political history ran a rocky course during the provincial era.
- compare the natural conflict that existed between the proprietary and popular elements in the government which began under Penn and grew stronger under his successors.
- evaluate the dominant role played by Pennsylvanians in the early development of the national government.
- differentiate the political developments that occurred in Pennsylvania during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, including reaction against the Federalist Party, Jeffersonian and Jacksonian Democratic dominance, the Constitition of 1838, and Pennsylvania and the antislavery movement.
- conclude how Pennsylvania's influence on national politics diminished gradually after 1861, although its industrial complex grew rapidly.
- Analyze how the status of women began to improve in Pennsylvania by the 1860s.
- demonstrate the population growth pattern in Pennsylvania from 1945 to the present.
- examine the system of public education that exists in Pennsylvania today.
Graduate Level RequirementAct 48 requires 42 hours of instruction plus 48 hours of out-of-class activity including a course project. Participants out-of-class assignments include but are not limited to:
- complete activities that incorporate the Pennsylvania Academic Standards.
- complete a final examination assessing their knowledge and application of course content.
- create a research project presentation that will elaborate on the life of a famous Pennsylvanian.
